From November 4th to 5th, the 2021 International Academic Forum on Green, Low-Carbon, and Sustainable Development was held in NJFU. This forum was co-sponsored by the College of International Education of NJFU and the Faculty of Forestry of the University of British Columbia (UBC), which adopted both online and offline with live broadcasting and attracted more than 1,200 international students from 30 countries and regions. From 80 papers delivered, 32 were accepted for oral reports and 4 in those are the performance of APFNet students. The forum invited Professor Huining Xiao from the University of New Brunswick, Canada, Professor Gavin Chit Tsui from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Professor John Innes, and Professor Tongli Wang from the University of British Columbia, Canada to give keynote speeches. These presentations covered 4 main topics of functional-modified cellulose as environmentally friendly materials, new avenues to efficient and selective trifluoromethylation and C-F bond activation using transition metals, the sustainable management of forests in the 21st century, and forest ecosystems and climate change adaptation. There were 8 sessions of discussion grouped into two main categories of Chemistry & Materials and Forestry & Ecology, hosted by foreign and native professors from NJFU.
All of the current APFNet students round 2020, and some from previous rounds attended the forum virtually from their own home countries. Four students from Myanmar, Indonesia, and Malaysia gave excellent presentations and caught much attention as actively discussion from audiences. By outstanding performance, Phyo Wai, a Master student from Myanmar, and Nor Halizah Binti Abd Halim, Ph.D. students from Malaysia won the 3rd prize on the topic of aboveground biomass estimation and forest offense cases under the COVID-19 pandemic. The academic forum is an important platform for students and professional experts to exchange academic concerns and achievements on the research contents of forestry and sustainable development.
